Review improvements to your articles

See which published articles are falling behind in search and what we would change, approve or dismiss each one, then check the rewrite and publish it.

Open Improvements under Content in the sidebar. When one of your published articles falls behind in search, Gofylo explains what is wrong and what it would change, and waits for you. Nothing is rewritten until you approve, and nothing on your article changes until you publish the rewrite.

What a proposal shows

  • What’s wrong: how the article did in Google search over the last 30 days, from your Search Console data.
  • What page one covers that this article doesn’t: the sections most of the pages on page one have that your article doesn't, the questions nobody answers, and how long those pages are. When those pages share no section, it says so.
  • What we’d change: each change has a tick box. Untick the ones you don't want.
  • What to expect: the searches the article is aimed at. Rankings usually take a few weeks to move after an update.

Approve, change or dismiss

  1. Untick any change you don't want. Add a note under Anything else?, set Length (words), or choose Use my own title and type it.
  2. Click Save changes to keep your edits, or Approve to accept.
  3. To say no, click Dismiss…, give a reason, and click Dismiss.

Note

Approving uses one of this month's articles, so an approval holds one until its rewrite is ready. The line above Approve says how many are used, how many are held for improvements you already approved, and when they reset. A rewrite that can't be finished doesn't use one.

A dismissed improvement is not proposed again for 60 days, unless the article's numbers change a lot. You find it under Passed on.

After you approve

The rewrite starts within a few minutes and takes a few more. Open it under Approved:

  • While it runs, it says the article is being rewritten.
  • When it's ready, What the rewrite changes lists each part that is added, removed or changed, and the title and meta description before and after when they change.
  • Click Publish to put the rewrite on your article. If your site is connected and can update a published post, the post on your site is updated too. Otherwise, update it on your site yourself.
  • Click Discard…, then Discard, to keep your article as it is. A discarded rewrite still counts as one of this month's articles, and the article is not proposed again for 60 days unless its numbers change a lot.

Text you wrote yourself in the editor is kept word for word. A rewrite that would leave out your text, or a section you didn't ask to change, is not offered: the improvement shows why under Approved, and your article stays as it is.

Going back

Publishing keeps your earlier text. Open the article and click Restore on it under Versions.

Tabs

  • Waiting: proposals waiting for you.
  • Approved: improvements you approved, while they are rewritten, when they are ready to publish, once they are published, or when their rewrite couldn't be finished.
  • Passed on: improvements you dismissed or discarded.

Choose what happens

What happens when an article falls behind is set for each site under When an article falls behind in search, on the Improvements tab of Content Settings: Propose and wait for approval (the default) or Apply automatically. Only an admin can change it. See Content Settings.

If it doesn't work

  • "This article changed since we proposed this": you or a teammate edited the article. The proposal was updated; review it and approve again.
  • "This article changed after the rewrite was prepared": the article's text was edited after its rewrite started, so publishing would undo those edits. The proposal is back under Waiting: approve it again for a fresh rewrite. It doesn't use another article.
  • "This month's articles are used up" (or "held for improvements you already approved"): approve again after the date shown.
