How to Track Your Brand's AI Visibility Score

major AI engines where your brand should be tracked

Here's a question most marketing teams can't answer: when a potential customer asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini about your product category, does your brand come up? And if it does — what exactly does the AI say about you?

In 2026, your AI visibility is as important as your Google ranking. But while every marketing team obsessively tracks SEO metrics, almost none have a system for measuring their presence across AI search engines. That's a massive blind spot.

You can't improve what you can't measure. If you're not tracking your AI visibility, you're ceding the fastest-growing discovery channel to your competitors.

What Is an AI Visibility Score?

An AI visibility score measures how often, how prominently, and how positively your brand appears in AI-generated responses. It's not a single number — it's a composite metric that captures several dimensions:

Citation frequency. How often does your brand appear when relevant queries are asked across AI engines? If someone asks "best content marketing platforms" 100 times across different AI models, how many responses mention you?

Citation position. Are you the first recommendation, or the fifth? AI responses typically list brands in order of perceived relevance. Being mentioned first carries significantly more weight than a passing mention at the end.

Sentiment quality. What does the AI actually say about you? A mention that says "Gofylo is a solid option for AI-powered content" is very different from "Gofylo is a newer tool with limited reviews."

Cross-engine consistency. Does your brand appear consistently across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini? Or do you only show up on one? Broad coverage indicates strong brand authority.

The Four AI Engines You Must Track

Not all AI engines are created equal. Each has different training data, retrieval methods, and recommendation patterns. You need to track all four:

ChatGPT (OpenAI). The largest user base by far. ChatGPT's recommendations carry enormous weight simply because of volume. It draws from web training data and increasingly integrates real-time search. If you're not being recommended here, you're missing the biggest audience.

Claude (Anthropic). Growing rapidly, especially among technical and business users. Claude tends to give more nuanced, balanced recommendations and often cites specific features and use cases. Strong presence here signals deep product authority.

Perplexity. The most search-like AI engine. Perplexity retrieves real-time web data for every query, making it uniquely responsive to recent content and mentions. Fresh, well-structured content has outsized impact here.

Gemini (Google). Deeply integrated into Google's ecosystem. Gemini's recommendations influence not just direct AI search but also Google's AI Overviews, which appear at the top of traditional search results. This is where SEO and GEO converge.

How to Manually Audit Your AI Visibility

Before you invest in tooling, start with a manual audit. It takes about an hour and gives you a baseline you can track over time.

Step 1: Define Your Query Set

Compile 15-20 queries that your ideal customer would ask an AI assistant. Mix broad category queries ("best content marketing tools") with specific problem queries ("how to track AI search visibility") and comparison queries ("Gofylo vs Semrush for organic growth").

Step 2: Query Each Engine

Run each query through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. For each response, record: (1) whether your brand was mentioned, (2) the position of the mention (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), (3) the sentiment (positive, neutral, negative), and (4) which competitors were also mentioned.

Step 3: Score and Track

Score each engine on a 0-100 scale. A simple formula: (mentions / total queries) × 100, weighted by position. First mention = 1.0x, second = 0.7x, third = 0.5x, later = 0.3x. Your composite score is the average across all four engines.

Pro tip: run this audit monthly at minimum. AI models update their training data and retrieval systems regularly, so your visibility can shift quickly in either direction.

What Good Looks Like

Based on our analysis of hundreds of B2B brands across AI engines, here's how to interpret your score:

  • 80-100: Dominant — you're consistently cited as a top recommendation. Focus on maintaining this position.
  • 60-79: Strong — you appear regularly but not consistently. Identify the gaps and produce targeted content.
  • 40-59: Emerging — you're on the AI's radar but not a go-to recommendation. You need more cross-source authority.
  • 20-39: Weak — occasional mentions, usually not in top positions. Time for a dedicated GEO strategy.
  • 0-19: Invisible — AI engines don't know you exist. Start with foundational content and community presence.

Common Reasons for Low AI Visibility

If your score is lower than expected, these are the most common root causes:

  • Thin content — your website has landing pages but no deep, educational content that AI can cite
  • No community presence — you're not being discussed on Reddit, forums, or industry blogs
  • Inconsistent brand entity — your brand name, description, and positioning vary across sources
  • Competitors dominate the conversation — they've published more, been mentioned more, and built stronger entity signals
  • Content isn't structured for AI — long paragraphs without clear headings, no specific claims, no data
  • Low freshness — your most recent content is months old. AI engines favor active brands.

Automating Your AI Visibility Tracking

Manual audits give you a baseline, but they don't scale. Querying four AI engines with 20 queries monthly is 80 manual checks — and that's the minimum. To track visibility properly, you need automation that:

  • Queries all major AI engines on a regular schedule with your target keywords
  • Parses responses to detect brand mentions, position, and sentiment
  • Tracks scores over time so you can spot trends and measure the impact of your content efforts
  • Monitors competitor visibility alongside yours for gap analysis
  • Alerts you when your visibility changes significantly — up or down
